Reaching the hard places

Ferries to islands and remote coasts

Most travel sites stop at the airport. A great many of the places families actually want to reach — a Greek island, Sardinia, the Croatian coast, Corsica — finish with a boat. These are the crossings that matter, with the airport your journey flies into first, so the ferry is part of the plan instead of a problem you discover later.

Sample estimates, not a quote. The ports, islands and vessel types are facts. The crossing times and fares are our own estimates — no ferry operator is connected to us yet, so we hold no live timetable, no availability and no booking. We would rather say that plainly than show you a number that looks real and is not.

7 crossings in Italy and its islands.

Capri

from Naples · Italy

Crossing
50m
Fare estimate
$30 per person
Vessel
hydrofoil
Runs
year-round

Short and frequent. Large suitcases are awkward on the island — porters are the norm.

Plan the journey to Naples

We plan your door-to-door journey as far as the port. The crossing itself is not bookable here yet.

Ischia

from Naples · Italy

Crossing
55m
Fare estimate
$28 per person
Vessel
fast ferry
Runs
year-round

Good family choice — quieter than Capri, and the ferries take cars.

Plan the journey to Naples

We plan your door-to-door journey as far as the port. The crossing itself is not bookable here yet.

Aeolian Islands (Lipari, Stromboli)

from Milazzo (Sicily) · Italy

Crossing
1h 30m
Fare estimate
$34 per person
Vessel
hydrofoil
Runs
reduced in winter

Reached by road from Catania first; sea state cancels hydrofoils before car ferries.

Plan the journey to Milazzo (Sicily)

We plan your door-to-door journey as far as the port. The crossing itself is not bookable here yet.

Sardinia (Olbia)

from Civitavecchia (Rome) · Italy

Crossing
7h
Fare estimate
$58 per person
Vessel
car ferry
Runs
year-round

Overnight cabins available; the sensible way to take a hire car to Sardinia.

Plan the journey to Civitavecchia (Rome)

We plan your door-to-door journey as far as the port. The crossing itself is not bookable here yet.

Sicily (Messina)

from Villa San Giovanni · Italy

Crossing
35m
Fare estimate
$12 per person
Vessel
car ferry
Runs
year-round

The short strait crossing — trains are loaded onto the ferry as well as cars.

Plan the journey to Villa San Giovanni

We plan your door-to-door journey as far as the port. The crossing itself is not bookable here yet.

Amalfi and Positano

from Salerno · Italy

Crossing
1h 10m
Fare estimate
$26 per person
Vessel
fast ferry
Runs
summer season

Far calmer than the coast road in summer, but it stops running out of season.

Plan the journey to Salerno

We plan your door-to-door journey as far as the port. The crossing itself is not bookable here yet.

Sardinia (Porto Torres)

from Genoa · Italy

Crossing
11h 30m
Fare estimate
$64 per person
Vessel
car ferry
Runs
year-round

The direct sea crossing from Genoa reaches Porto Torres, not Cagliari. Continue overland across Sardinia for Cagliari.

Plan the journey to Genoa

We plan your door-to-door journey as far as the port. The crossing itself is not bookable here yet.

Why we treat a boat as part of the journey

A missed sailing is worse than a missed train: on many of these routes the next one is tomorrow. So when your plan ends with a crossing, our calculation holds a deliberate buffer before the sailing cut-off, counts the road or rail leg to the port, and tells you when a same-day connection is too tight to trust — instead of leaving you to work it out at the quayside.
